Why Travelers Love Our Mekong Delta Homestay Tour: A Heartfelt Journey Into Real Local Life

A Traveler’s Review That Says It All

Some travel experiences stay with you long after a trip ends — and for many travelers, our Mekong Delta homestay tour becomes exactly that. During a three-week stay in Ho Chi Minh City, one guest set out with a simple wish: a guided weekend tour that included a genuine homestay with a local Vietnamese family. Their final verdict?

“This tour fit exactly what we were looking for.”

What began as a short escape from Saigon turned into one of the most memorable highlights of their Vietnam journey. Their review captures the heart of what makes the Mekong Delta magical: slow rivers, warm families, authentic food, and simple moments that feel deeply human.

If you’re searching for a Mekong experience that goes beyond the usual attractions, this is where it begins.

From Ho Chi Minh City to the Delta: A Smooth Weekend Escape

Reaching the Mekong Delta is easier (and faster) than most travelers expect. Depending on the traffic, the journey takes only about two to three hours — just enough time to leave behind the city buzz and slip into the calm rhythm of river life.

The moment you arrive in Bến Tre, everything changes: the air becomes fresher, the scenery greener, and the pace slower.

Sampan Ride Through Quiet Shaded Mekong Delta Canals

The first activity sets the tone — a peaceful boat ride along one of the Mekong’s winding tributaries. According to our guest, it was “a fascinating ride in and of itself,” and it’s easy to understand why: coconut palms arching overhead, small boats drifting by, and the river reflecting the warm southern sun.

A sampan ride through the smaller waterways is often described as the most peaceful part of the day. Surrounded by lush greenery and coconut trees, you float gently through narrow canals untouched by mass tourism — the perfect moment to slow down and soak in the Delta’s charm.

Visit to the Coconut Kingdom

Ben Tre is famous across Vietnam as the Coconut Kingdom, and this tour brings you directly into the heart of that world. Travelers get to explore:

  • A coconut plantation
  • A family-owned processing workshop
  • Traditional coconut candy making
  • Local crafts unique to the region

It’s not a staged demonstration — it’s real, everyday livelihood.

Authentic Island Homestay Near Can Tho: The Heart of the Experience

After leaving Ben Tre, the journey continues to a small island near Can Tho, where a warm and welcoming Vietnamese family hosts you for the night. Many travelers consistently highlight this stop as the absolute highlight of the tour, a place where the pace slows and life on the Mekong feels truly authentic.

Upon arrival, guests are greeted with a friendly smile and the aroma of home-cooked meals. The accommodations are comfortable, cozy, and perfectly suited for a night immersed in local life. As one of our guests put it:

  • “Accommodations were excellent”
  • “The family was delightful”
  • “The foods they prepared were delicious”

But the experience goes far beyond just a place to sleep. Guests are invited to take part in an interactive cooking class, guided by a local family member. Here, travelers get to learn firsthand how to make bánh xèo, the crispy Vietnamese pancake that is a specialty of the region. Under the careful instruction of the host, visitors mix the batter, prepare the fillings, and master the art of folding and frying the pancake to perfection.

After cooking, everyone gathers around the table to enjoy a warm, communal dinner together, sharing the fruits of their efforts. This intimate dining experience allows guests to taste the authentic flavors of southern Vietnam while engaging in conversation with their hosts, discovering stories, traditions, and the genuine hospitality that makes staying at a local homestay so memorable.

This night on the island isn’t just about food — it’s a chance to step inside the daily life of a Vietnamese family, connect with the culture, and create lasting memories that go far beyond typical tourist experiences.

Biking Around the Island

The homestay provides bicycles, giving travelers a chance to explore the island on a smooth, paved trail. You’ll pass fruit gardens, local houses, friendly neighbors, and children waving hello — a scene that feels like stepping into a postcard of rural Vietnam.

Can Tho Floating Market: Breakfast on the River

The next morning brings an extraordinary experience: Cái Răng floating market — one of the last true floating markets still operating in Vietnam.

But the most unforgettable part?

Breakfast served directly from local vendors’ boats.

As our traveler shared:

  • One vendor cooked their hot meal from a boat tied to one side.
  • Another squeezed fresh orange juice from the boat tied to the other side.

It’s a once-in-a-lifetime moment that blends culture, food, and river life in the most charming way.

A Unique Cultural Touch: Visiting a Khmer Temple

Instead of visiting a typical Vietnamese Buddhist temple, this tour includes something special — a Khmer pagoda, offering a glimpse into the cultural diversity of southern Vietnam. With different architecture, colors, and traditions, it gives travelers a fresh perspective beyond the usual sightseeing spots.

A Heartfelt Review From Mr. Steve — Thank You for Trusting Us!

We are truly grateful for every traveler who chooses to explore the Mekong Delta with us.

Below is the unedited, full review from Mr. St one of our wonderful guests who generously shared his experience:

“We wanted to take a guided weekend tour into the Mekong Delta Region of Vietnam during our 3-week stay in Ho Chi Minh City. We specifically wanted that tour to include a homestay with a local Vietnamese family. This tour fit exactly what we were looking for. We loved the activities that were included as part of this particular package. From Ho Chi Minh City it doesn’t take too long to arrive in the Mekong Delta, a two- to three-hour trip depending on the traffic.

Once we arrived in Ben Tre the activities began. We got to take a river boat ride down one of the Mekong River tributaries, which was a facinating ride in and of itself. Our destination was the so-called Coconut Kingdom where we visited a coconut plantation and processing facility. We got to take a sampan ride through the smaller canals in the area.

From there our car journey continued to take us to a local homestay residence on an island near the Can Tho province. The accommodations were excellent at the homestay and the family was delightful, along with the foods they prepared for us during our stay. They had bicycles available for us and we got to take an interesting bike ride around the entire island along a smooth and easy paved trail.

After our overnight stay, we journeyed to Can Tho itself to visit the floating market still operating there, which was a very unique experience. The highlight was our breakfast provided on our boat entirely by a couple of the local vendors’ boats that tied up right next to us. One cooked the meal on their boat on one side of us, while the other squeezed fresh orange juice in her boat tied on the other side.

After leaving the floating market, instead of the usual Vietnam Buddhist temple, we took the opportunity to visit a Khmer Buddhist temple where we got a slightly different perspective on what we had visited in other Buddhist temples. Those were just some of the highlights.

Of course I have to note that the overall value of a guided tour experience is the tour guide him/herself. Our tour guide, Henry was exemplary! His English is excellent and he’s extremely friendly, knowledgeable, attentive, and fun. Plus, when you’re traveling with others and you’re taking pictures of everyone else that don’t have you in them, don’t worry. Henry shares everything he shoots of all of you!
